Blog Entry2007 UAAP CHEERDANCE COMPETITIONSep 17, '07 9:31 AM
for everyone
"We want to show our supporters a routine that will lay to rest all doubts as to who the real winner should be."
- UP PEP SQUAD

And they did just as they promised! They said they will show a routine that has never been done in the Philippines and they were able to deliver it gracefully. They again proved that they definitely set the trend and is unquestionably one of the most creative teams among the competitors.

The 2007 UAAP Cheerdance Competition is  probably the most memorable among all attended editions of the competition. This not because UP finally ended the five year attempt of winning back the crown - of course that is part of the reason which makes this a memorable one - but more memorable is our effort to get tickets for the show.

Rose was the first to arrive there. She was there before 7am and was relatively in front of the line (20th I guess). I arrived half an hour past seven. Then came Carlos, then Ace, Then Rachelle with Jacel, then Miguel, then Dan, then Raech, then Ate Malay with BF. Lucky us, we thought. Lined up at the ticket booth which is supposed to sell upperbox tickets and we are positioned near the beginning of the pile. Little did we know that everything was about to go wrong. This ticket booth was the last to open at 1pm so that is roughly about six hours of standing in line to endure. Plus, since all the other booths which opened at an earlier time are of "sold out" status, the other viewer wannabes flocked to this booth. A hundred persons more and the line was all messed up. Singit dito, singit doon and after all the pushing, the only thing missing was a stampede. And it did come soon enough...

A few minutes before the ticket booth was about to open, people were already going gaga over the tickets. There was this big fat sweaty gay who was standing behind me (more of leaning I think) who was screaming the hell out of his/her lungs just to attract attention. And when the break out came, he was already touching me in places. DISGUSTING! Everyone was pushing against each other and the sad thing is that the organizers of the event did not even bother to calm down the crowd.

And when the police finally came, they were pushing the crowd in random directions. A handful more of poor crowd control and we were nowhere the beginning of the line. So we made singit nalang. Careful enough to not be noticed. While I was distracting the guards, Raech made her way in and I pretended to be her boyfriend. Haha. But the sad part is that only me and Raech and Miguel and Dan got in. The other guys who patiently lined up became victims of the poor turn of events.

Fast forward and there we are cheering when UP was announced the winner. It was expected all the way. Even the growling tigers were tamed when UST's performance closed. They already knew defeat - haha! I was very disappointed that even after three falls and a lousy stint, that UST even landed second. and score was very close to UP - half a point difference. I was expecting FEU to win first runner up and Ateneo second runner up. O well, nandaya nanaman sila cguro. Haha!

There is this text message circulating: "Mahirap ang masyadong sikat ng 5yrs... GIve chance to others kaya rest muna po kme ngayon.. Next year na ulit! KAMI PO ANG UNIVERSITY OF STO. TOMAS. Go USTE!"

Sabi naman ni Cathy: "Not winning has never been about giving chance to others. Idiots! To begin with, you joined the contest to win, not to give chance to others! Belat!"

Sabi ko naman: YOUR DREAM, OUR REALITY!

Nothing follows.. Hehe..

Last year, people were insulting UP because of their costume, etc etc. (I wish you understand the concept of "BACK to BASIC" as a basis for their routine.) This year the criteria did not give much importance to props nor costume but to the creativity and choreograpy of the routine.

UP has always explored not only how to maximize body movement and synchonicity but as well as the use of the floor space. The costume was also consistent with the concept of "rock". ---Edgy, chaotic by synchronized.

It just shows that the sensibilities of the judges have improved. A dance or cheeredance should not be a mere "production number" but an artistic endeavor with a concept-- a framework..

Congratulations to UP for elevating the concept of cheerdancing..
